The impala were everywhere ~
A large crocodile waiting by the hippo pool~
Love birds ~ really
Impala and the comical warthogs ~
Something lost the race ~
One of the "good" roads ~
More hippos ~ every hump in the water, even way in the back, is a hippo
Two of the hippos came out of the water to graze ~ they are huge
Just pretty sights on the savannah ~
And the great wildebeest migration ~ we were surrounded. We wished we would have been able to get a picture of our jeep literally surrounded by wildebeests and zebras ~ amazing. And then they started running ~ look out!
We managed to escape and found this lion up in the tree. It was so funny to watch.
See her in the tree ~
We caught her from every angle ~
More wildebeests and zebras ~ and this isn't even the height of the migration
Some left over mud from yesterday's rain~
Sometimes the road looked more like a river bed.
It was amazing to be in the middle of this migration and hear the
sound of the pounding hooves. Sometimes they were running right at the jeep and at the last minute one would change direction and the herd would follow.
Very exciting!
Uh oh, traffic jam in the Serengeti! What's going on?
Oh, we just missed a kill! All of those wildebeests running in the tall grass = a kill. We missed the actual take down but we saw the lion circling her kill and then she laid down and had lunch so we couldn't see her any more.
These are called Maasai rocks because the Maasai used to live in this area.
Another lion ~
she is taking a nap ~ they sure like to sleep
This whole area was just loaded with wildebeests and zebras ~
The rain yesterday, and all the wildebeest = flies and poor
Dana was in the front getting it all ~
Good thing they don't bite
Our least favorite ~ the hyena
More hippos and the wildebeests and zebras right behind ~
WOW ~ five lions in the tree ~ can you find them all?
1, 2, . . .
3 . . .
4 . . .
5
When they tried to change positions ~ it was comical
Doesn't look very comfortable ~ not sure how she's going to get out of there ~
It had turned out to be a beautiful day and we started heading back to the lodge but the sights continued ~
Our graceful giraffes ~
The comical warthog ~
And his family ~ the tiny ones were really cute ~
And then ~ the herd of elephants that were on the road just below our lodge.
After dusk each evening and throughout the night or early in the morning we had to be escorted to and from our hut to the lodge for dinner or anything else to make sure we were safe from predators. These elephants were in the lodge area and there was also a leopard that had been up in the lodge area while we were there. Snakes, poisonous snakes, were always an issue. Guest were always supposed to use walkways, not walk through the grass. The snakes dislike people as much as we dislike them so they don't come around often. After dark there are armed guards that quietly walk the perimeters. You rarely even see them and we always felt safe. These are just precautions.
As always, the little ones were adorable ~
And the big ones ~ powerful. Even at the lodge we could hear snapping ~ like during an ice storm at home, trees snapping, only this was the elephants snapping the trees to bring them down for the little ones.
We were back at the lodge around 1:30 ~ only a 5 1/2 hr day today~
so we were able to enjoy our beautiful lodge and the beautiful day.
Another great day in the Serengeti .
