Zanzibar ~ Spice Tour ~ Part II

Wednesday, January 29 pm

Spice tour continued ~

Chocolate ~ huh ~ yup this is chocolate ~

The brown seeds are used to make chocolate ~ the white makes cocoa butter which is what people call white chocolate ~

Star fruit ~

Lipstick plant ~ used to turn curries bright ~

After our tour we were taken to a small village where we were able to purchase spice oils ~
Next on the tour was an authentic Zanzibar meal ~ this food was cooked with many of the fresh spices and was very good.
We were also able to buy any of the spices here ~ (reminded us of China)

After lunch we went to see the slave caves. Zanzibaris captured their own people ~ hid them in the caves and then sold them through the black market.

The caves were huge ~ at times 400 or more men and women were held in at one time. One end of the cave exited into the village while the other end led to the ocean.

Our way in and out ~

Our last experience for the day was the beach. We had to climb down some very deep steps ~

which opened onto the white sandy beach ~

Someone's catch for the day~

A couple of our group went swimming while the rest of us enjoyed the breeze~

As we drove back to town we saw the children coming home from school ~

Later we walked along the water front. We checked out Forodhani Gardens but decided to walk on down to a restaurant.

There is an old Fig tree known locally as the Big Tree. The shaded area underneath it is currently used as a workshop for men building boats. It's a good place to find boat pilots to hire for a cruise to Prisoner Island or Bawe Island.

Stone Town is a city of cats ~ they're everywhere~

We ate dinner at Mercury's ~ a tribute to Freddy Mercury lead singer from the band Queen, a british band formed in the 1970s, who was born in Zanzibar.

Another beautiful sunset as we ate our dinner ~

The waiter gave Dana and I a jasmine corsage ~ don't know why ~ but it smelled great ~

Can't beat the atmosphere ~
